Anthony Martial set to leave Man United this summer for free

According to talkSPORT, Anthony Martial is part of the group of players Man United are looking to let go ahead of next season.

The France international’s contract runs out at the end of this season, and there have been no signs of talks happening for a renewal.

After initial signs of promise under Erik ten Hag, the 28-year-old drifted away into absences and mediocre performances, which succinctly sums up his entire Man United career.

Martial arrived from Monaco back in 2015 with a substantial price tag and a lot of fanfare and immediately won the Old Trafford faithful to his side as he scored the winner on his debut in a 3-1 win over Liverpool.

He never reached the heights he hinted he could, however, and a confluence of injuries, managerial turnovers, and on-off form means, despite some scintillating performances, Martial will be remembered as the one that didn’t work out.

A necessary exit

That Anthony Martial looks set to leave for free instead of having let go a fair while ago in exchange for a fee is again just one of many, many examples that demonstrate United’s lack of footballing acumen that has hampered their long-term progress over the last decade.

Martial is being targetted by Inter’s CEO for sport, Giuseppe Marotta, and that is a man who knows an exquisite free signing when he sees one. With Simone Inzaghi preferring two-striker setups, it won’t be a surprise if Martial were to thrive in Italy over the next years.

As for United, however, this is an exit that has needed to happen for quite some time. The Red Devils need to move on and learn to live in the present and judiciously plan for the future as a new dawn awaits them on the other side of summer.
