Manchester United defender Luke Shaw doubtful to feature for England after sustaining a head injury in the Manchester derby

According to The Athletic, Luke Shaw could be unavailable for the English national team after picking up a head injury for Manchester United in their latest Premier League fixture.

The 26-year-old defender was struggling on the night against Manchester City in yet another poor performance at Old Trafford. The English international could be questioned for his decision-making in what led to the second goal for the Citizens in the derby. Shaw and Harry Maguire left the ball as Bernado Silva came from behind to finish a near-impossible goal at the back post.

The Red Devils could have been in a much worse position if it wasn’t for a spirited performance by David De Gea in goal. Shaw also suffered a head injury in a duel with Rodri. He returned to the playing field but had to be removed shortly afterwards as Man United used their concussion substitute to replace him.

An official statement from Manchester United (h/t The Athletic) showed the way Shaw’s situation would be handled. It also highlighted that Gareth Southgate and the England squad would be kept in the loop regarding the situation:

“Whether he will link up with Gareth Southgate’s side will depend on an assessment of the problem and a check on the concussion, that led to United making four substitutions. Shaw’s head injury was managed in accordance with FA guidelines and he was removed from the field of play as soon as a concussion was suspected. Luke will now be monitored by club medical staff, following The FA return to play protocol, and England will be kept updated on progress.”

Shaw will now be monitored by the club’s medical staff and the Three Lions staff will be kept updated on his condition. Whether he will be deemed fit enough to take part remains to be seen.

The former Southampton defender was struggling under the previous manager Jose Mourinho but started to find his feet again under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were one of the most feared wing-back partnerships in the Premier League last season.

The left-back has struggled to emulate that same form on a consistent basis this season and an injury could put him off for a while further. The entire backline at Old Trafford has struggled on numerous occasions this campaign. The Norwegian manager tried to tweak his system with a back three but it doesn’t seem to have made any substantial changes for the team.

We do not know the extent of Shaw’s injury at the moment. That being said the English side could deploy Ben Chilwell in that position at the moment based on recent form. Man United have been struggling at the back and a huge change is needed if things are to become any better in the recent future.
