Gary Neville shared that the lack of trophies under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be a problem for Manchester United
In conversation with Martin Tyler on the Gary Neville Podcast (h/t Manchester Evening News), Gary Neville highlights the lack of silverware as a stinging worry for Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian manager has been receiving a lot of flak lately. He came in as the interim manager and was initially impressive at the start of his managerial tenure at Old Trafford. The journey has been filled with ups and downs for the 48-year-old but that all-important piece of silverware has eluded him.
His position as manager has in recent times come under scrutiny. But then one cannot hide from the hiding taken at home to Liverpool and Manchester City, our two biggest rivals. Neville has protected Ole in the past and been patient with him but the former Molde FK manager may be running out of time at Old Trafford.
Gary Neville spoke to Martin Tyler about Solskjaer and how he has progressed the club ever since taking charge from Jose Mourinho:
“Ole has progressed the club in the last two or three years – sixth, third, second. They should have won the trophy against Villarreal. I still harp back to that, it was a bad moment. When you lose trophies and you lose finals, it has a real impact on players. On the other side of that, if you win the trophy, that medal around your neck – it removes that issue that you’ve got of not winning a trophy for a few years. You need that trophy under your belt.”
Manchester United were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham United which adds further salt to the wounds. The 48-year-old manager has tried to tweak the formation with a back three at times. These tactical changes haven’t worked out so far and tougher opposition have found it easier to pass the ball through the Red Devils midfield.
The fact is that he deployed the same formation against Manchester City as he did at Tottenham Hotspur and was unable to tweak it when Pep Guardiola found him out. The inability to respond on the field plus him behind his peers at the top of the Premier League.
United have relied heavily on Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes through the campaign but there hasn’t been any sustainable growth in the squad. The Manchester-based club have now gone 1637 days (as reported by Express on 7th November) without winning a major trophy which is a huge issue for a club of this stature.

There seems to be a sombre mood around Old Trafford. Man United will have to get back to their winning ways on a more consistent basis or the hierarchy may have to take a tough decision to let go of the Norwegian manager who has been at the helm for quite a while now.
