Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praises Manchester United ace David de Gea after penalty heroics vs West Ham

Speaking to Sky Sports after the West Ham game (h/t The Metro), Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed the performance of David de Gea after his incredible penalty save in the dying embers of the game against West Ham.

In one of the most thrilling encounters on the weekend, United played a hugely entertaining tie against West Ham United and it did not look like the Red Devils were going to pick up any points on the day after the Hammers went a goal up after just half an hour.

However, Solskjaer’s men retaliated almost immediately as Cristiano Ronaldo poked home from close distance. In the second half, the Norwegian boss brought on Jesse Lingard, who eventually scored an incredible winner in the 89th minute of the game.

While it seemed like the game was done and dusted, Luke Shaw conceded a penalty in added time, and David Moyes brought on Mark Noble from the bench to take the decisive kick. However, to United’s rescue came David de Gea, who produced an incredible save and helped United take all three points home.

Solskjaer expressed his happiness with the goalkeeper after the game. He told Sky Sports (h/t The Metro):

‘He’s a different man! Of course, he asked to come back early from pre-season. He wanted to show how good he is. He’s so focused, and of course, he saved two points for us today.’

This penalty save would have meant a whole lot for the 30-year-old shot-stopper, who has only managed a single clean sheet this season. Moreover, this is also somebody who failed to save a single penalty in the club’s penalty shoot-out against Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League final at the end of last season.

Thus, De Gea will now look to build upon this performance as he aims to retain a starting spot in the team this season.
