Former Spanish coach blames Manchester United defence for criticism faced by David de Gea
Speaking in an interview with The Sun, Gabino Rodriguez, who is the former coach of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, blamed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence for the flak received by the Spaniard.
David de Gea has for long been the undisputed No. 1 for United ever since his move from Atletico Madrid. But he has received a fair amount of criticism this season, with Dean Henderson offering him serious competition for the number one spot.
The Spanish international caught the most flak this season after the UEFA Europa League final against Villareal. He let in 11 consecutive penalties in the shoot-out before seeing his spot-kick saved to hand United the loss.
However, Rodriguez thinks that de Gea has been made to look bad by the defence in front of him. He coached the shot-stopper during his time with Spanish U-21s.
“Softer than a muffin”
“I always believe the team is a true reflection of the character of its coach. Look at the one led by Sir Alex Ferguson and that would show no mercy. But Ole’s team is softer than a muffin and David is suffering the consequences of the defensive frailties.”
He then pointed his finger at the two centre-backs and called them ‘slow’. Harry Maguire has partnered one of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly in the heart of United’s defence over the course of this season.
“The two centre-backs are too slow, they are not commanding and other teams are well aware of it. The big problem is Solskjaer’s tactical organisation. United’s defensive deficiencies are undervaluing De Gea and Ole just doesn’t convince me.”
The 30-year-old de Gea played in 26 Premier League games this season and would believe that he is still the club’s first-choice between the sticks going into the next campaign.

But Henderson is knocking on the door to establish himself as the club’s new No. 1. The onus now lies on de Gea to step up to the plate and show why he is considered one of the best in the business.
