Fans slam Manchester United after penalty shootout loss in Europa League final

Manchester United failed to end the 2020/21 campaign with a trophy as they succumbed to a penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League final.

Manchester United dominated possession from the start but chances weren’t forthcoming. And, instead it was Villarreal who took the lead just before the half-hour mark through Gerard Moreno.

Manchester United found an equaliser ten minutes into the second half through Edinson Cavani. And while the Red Devils continued to dominate possession yet again, they failed to create much of note yet again, leading to the game going into extra-time.

Manchester United, surprisingly, sat back and allowed Villarreal control in the extra-time, but neither team had enough quality to create a notable opening.

With the game going into penalties, Villarreal converted each of their 11 kicks from the spot while David de Gea, who failed to save a single one, also missed his spot-kick to hand the La Liga side the trophy.

It was a disastrous result after a dour performance from the entire team, with none of the big players – Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, stepping up when needed. And, fans were left seething over the display.

It was baffling to see Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not make any substitutions up until almost full-time. Goes on to show how little faith he seems to have on some of his players outside of his strongest XI.

While there has been progress made, this result yet again showed that there’s still a long way to go for United to be able to actually challenge Manchester City for the title.
