Eyebrows were raised when young hotshot Mason Greenwood was omitted from the Manchester United squad for the UEFA Champions League group stages.

The Red Devils have put out a strong 25-man squad that represents the quality and depth present in our roster at the moment. Greenwood’s absence stood out in particular given his hot streak of form. It prompted fears that the player was suffering from an injury.

According to Manchester Evening News, fans can rest easy knowing that Greenwood is eligible to compete in the competition and there is nothing to worry about.

In fact, his name has been omitted as United do not need to register him, to begin with. According to UEFA’s rules, any player under the age of 21 who also qualifies as homegrown need not be registered as part of the maximum 25-man squad for the tournament. They can instead be named in the B-list.

The B list is not shown on the UEFA website and can be amended by the club at any time. As a member of the list, Greenwood will have no trouble taking part in our European games.

This is not the first time that United have adopted such a stance. The trio of Anthony Elanga, Shola Shoretire and Hannibal Mejbri were all added to the B list last season following their promotion to the senior side.

By doing the same with Greenwood, we have the advantage of having a spot open on the roster to accommodate another player. It should ensure we have enough strength in reserve for when it is needed.

Greenwood has been our most prolific striker this season. The 19-year-old has scored three goals in three games so far in the English Premier League. Hopefully, this is the season he amplifies his development and lays a stake for the starting striker’s spot.
