Transfer News: Manchester United ace Anthony Martial rejected Lyon move to play with Cristiano Ronaldo
According to journalist Ekrem Konur (h/t Inside Futbol), Anthony Martial rejected a deadline day transfer from Lyon in order to play with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.
The Ligue 1 side were interested in bring Martial back to France up until the last day of the transfer window. Martial, of course, played in the French top-division with AS Monaco.
And before his move to the Monegasques, Martial was playing at Olympique Lyon’s youth set-up. Les Gones wanted to bring their academy graduate back to Groupama Stadium.
But as it turns out, Peter Bosz will not have the 25-year-old forward in his team for this season, at the very least. Martial wanted to stay at Man United and play with the Red Devils’ new signing, Ronaldo.
Martial declines deadline day deal
The 36-year-old joined the Old Trafford outfit after 12 years away from Manchester and is likely to send Martial further down the pecking order.
But apparently, the Frenchman is okay with the situation and wants to share the dressing with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. He did not have a good season in front of goal for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team during the last campaign.
He failed to capture the form he showed in the 2019/20 season and as a result, the club tried out several options in the No. 9 positions, including playing Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani.

Martial is not a bad footballer by any means. If he rediscovers the form which made United agree to a potential transfer fee rising to £61.5million for him back in 2015, there is no reason why he wouldn’t have a place in the starting XI.
