Transfer News: Manchester United could still sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid

According to Jonathan Shrager on Twitter (h/t Express), Manchester United are still pursuing Atletico Madrid defender, Kieran Trippier.

The English right-back has been linked with the Red Devils this summer and the interest makes sense considering the lack of solid competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka down the right-hand side.

Trippier, who has a release clause believed to be around £34million, joined Atletico from Tottenham Hotspur two years ago. He won the La Liga title in his second season under Diego Simeone and left a lasting impression that season.

But the report mentions that Trippier is seeking a return to the Premier League as United to strengthen the right side of their defence, and Shrager thinks that a transfer is still possible despite no significant progress in negotiations.

United chase Trippier

“Whilst nothing has significantly progressed, I am told that #MUFC remain interested in Trippier, and that there is still a chance it may happen.”

United’s need to sign Trippier can perhaps be summed up in the harsh but somewhat veracious words of Charlie Austin. Speaking to TalkSPORT (h/t Express) after QPR played Man United in a pre-season friendly, the English striker said:

Aaron Wan-Bissaka had a tough time against QPR during the pre-season.

“Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not up to the [required] quality. We played them the other day, and I know it was only a pre-season friendly, but they need to go all out for Kieran Trippier. That’s who they’re crying out for. He [Wan-Bissaka] can’t defend! His final ball is not what a centre-forward wants, it’s not what Cavani wants, it’s not what Rashford wants.”

More Manchester United News:

Trippier can definitely offer United a useful option when in possession on the ball, and United can use both Wan-Bissaka and the former Tottenham Hotspur star as and when they like during the season. Signing the Atletico defender shouldn’t mean the end of the road for Wan-Bissaka, who is still a talented young player.
