Paul Merson brands Manchester United new boy as the signing of the summer
According to The Daily Star (h/t The Metro), Paul Merson believes Manchester United have landed themselves the acquisition of the summer following the unveiling of Raphael Varane earlier today.
The French international became the club’s senior signing this summer and addresses one of the key weaknesses in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad. Alongside skipper Harry Maguire, Varane can form one of the best centre-back pairings in England if not Europe.
The Red Devils unveiled the defender in front of a rapacious Old Trafford crowd ahead of the match against Leeds United. The 28-year-old watched on as Solskjaer’s men dismantled Marcelo Bielsa’s side 5-1 on the night. It is fair to say that we could not have asked for a better start to the season.
There have been a number of blockbuster deals in the Premier League this s season. Manchester City broke the British record for Jack Grealish before Chelsea blew the big bucks to bring back Romelu Lukaku. United too paid a king’s ransom to land Jadon Sanco. Merson however believes it is Varane’s signing that could make the difference come to the end of the season.

The Frenchman is expected to turn United into title contenders. Despite having a strong squad, we could finish only second, 12 points off City last season. With two key weaknesses in the squad now addressed, the sky is the limit.
“I think that’s a major signing. With all the class and experience he brings with him from Real Madrid, I think he’s going to have a massive impact.”
Varane signed a four-year deal with United and will sport the No.19 shirt. With the deal now done, it remains to be seen if he will make next weekend’s trip to the Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Frenchman arrives at United following g a glittering decade at Real Madrid that saw him win it all. He will be hopeful of keeping that run going at Old Trafford and do his part to help the club gain glory.

There is little reason to doubt Merson’s statement that Varane would be an excellent addition to United. The onus is now on him to perform and Solskjaer to get the best out of him. Time will tell whether Varane is truly the signing of the summer.
