Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur ready to sign Manchester United target Pau Torres

According to The Times (h/t AS in English), Tottenham Hotspur are ready to pounce on Villarreal defender and Manchester United transfer target, Pau Torres.

The Spanish defender has been linked with an exit from the Yellow Submarine this summer, with Spurs, Man United, Manchester City, and Liverpool all keen to sign him.

Villarreal value their 24-year-old star at £55million, with the report mentioning that Spurs are ‘ready to pounce’. United, in all honesty, don’t have any need for a second signing in defence this season even after Raphael Varane’s arrival.

The 28-year-old French defender, who has left Real Madrid to join the Red Devils, will undoubtedly be the preferred partner to Harry Maguire in the heart of Manchester United’s defence.

No need for Torres

And beyond the duo, we have Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof. That is a pretty stacked defensive roster and the need for Torres doesn’t seem to be urgent.

It wouldn’t be wrong if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to sign another defender though. The club can always use depth in quality. But Torres’ hefty price tag is what makes such a move look unnecessary.

United should rather put any such funds towards securing, perhaps, another striker to compete with Anthony Martial and to take over the reins if and when Edinson Cavani departs the club – whenever that may be.

More Manchester United News:

Eric Bailly, who coincidentally joined United from Villarreal, would like to think he has a big role to play this season. The same should go for Lindelof, who would undoubtedly want to establish himself as a starter at the club.
