Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire makes Dean Henderson admission following derby win
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has praised Dean Henderson following the win over City in the derby.
The 23-year-old, stepping in for the absent David de Gea, kept his second straight clean sheet in the league. He was alert when needed and did not give the City strikers any leeway.
Maguire believes Henderson has all the attributes needed to become the United No.1 in the future. However, he insists that David de Gea is currently the first choice custodian at Old Trafford.
The 23-year-old Henderson returned to United last summer following a two-year loan spell at Sheffield United. But he has found himself behind De Gea in the pecking order.
Yesterday’s shutout was the Englishman’s ninth clean sheet in 14 starts this season. It does his chances of establishing himself as United’s long-term No.1 no harm and gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a welcome headache.
“He’s a confident lad, to play in goal for Manchester United you’ve got to be confident, it’s probably the most scrutinised position in English football.”
“He has all the ability and for the future to be No.1 but at the moment David is there, he’s an excellent keeper, he’s been at this club numerous years, he’s got great experience.”
Pushing each other to the limit!
Maguire believes Henderson has the opportunity to learn much from De Gea, a veteran who has held the No.1 spot close to a decade. Competition for the position should help both players step up their games.
The United skipper also termed the clean sheet as a dream come true for Henderson, a Red Devils fan growing up.
“It’s good to have that competition and I’m sure he’ll be very happy tonight to keep a clean sheet in the derby and as a Manchester United fan growing up.”
