Scholes praises Fred and Scott McTominay as Manchester United trump City
According to Premier League Productions (h/t The Mirror), Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has earmarked Fred and Scott McTominay for the roles they played in our win against Manchester City.
Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw were the goalscorers on the night and rightfully took the plaudits. However, Scholes believes United’s midfield duo deserve their own credit for the performance.
While the Red Devils were impressive on the counter, a lot of their good work came off the ball. City dominated possession but the fact that they could not make it count was because of our holding duo.
The City duo of Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan have both been instrumental in their success this season. The fact that United could keep them both quiet is thanks to both Fred and McTominat’s efforts.
“I think they did that, Fred and McTominay had a big job, but you could see how tight and compact they were, there was no space for City in there.”
Nipping it at the origin!
Stopping the City duo goes a long way in stifling their attack. United have, if anything, went about their work perfectly. The reigning PFA Player of the Year, De Bruyne was relegated to a mere afterthought.
“City’s best players are obviously De Bruyne and Gundogan, so if you stop them you go a long way to stopping City. You have to say they didn’t really have an influence on the game.”
Getting the midfield right was instrumental and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed to do just that. Fred and McTominay have been the club’s preferred midfield duo in the big games and yesterday they showed why.
