Solskjaer insists Manchester United stars played out of their skin to defeat City

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a happy man as Manchester United rose to the challenge presented by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The Red Devils made short work of their more illustrious opponents to not just grab bragging rights but also keep the title race open. The win leaves us 11 points behind City with 10 games to go.

The United players were up to the task and showed it from the onset. Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty in the second minute to give the Red Devils a dream start. So much for him not scoring against the top teams.

A second-half strike from the in-form Luke Shaw gave United a two-goal cushion that they would never relinquish.

According to the Guardian, Solskjaer admitted that the match demanded a lot from his players, something that they duly gave. Playing against a Guardiola side is never easy but our men were up to that task.

“We suffered a lot, the players worked their nuts off.”

While the Norwegian believes that the performance will hold his players in good stead, he is not willing to let them get ahead of themselves. United face AC Milan next and Solskjaer is keen to take it one game at a time.

“None of these boys can look beyond Thursday [against Milan in the Europa League], all we can think about is Thursday, one game at a time and see where we are at.”

Consistency is key!

Solskjaer also urged his players to learn from the performance and imbibe consistency into their play. While United have looked impressive this season, a lack of consistency has seen them throw away positions of advantage.

“I want the players to improve, we want to learn from this experience. We need to improve on so many things to get our consistency better.”

City still hold an 11-point advantage over United. While the title race isn’t in our hands, Solskjaer believes it should not stop his side from trying to win all of their games.

United are slowly but steadily improving

After all, the least we can do is showcase how far we have come since last season.

Speaking ahead of the game, Solskjaer revealed that he does not need to copy Guardiola’s tactics to guarantee success. If yesterday was an audition, the Norwegian surely made his point count.
