Solskjaer explains why Manchester United ace Edinson Cavani was absent against City
According to the club’s official site, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained why Edinson Cavani was absent from the Manchester United side that took on City in the derby yesterday night.
The 34-year-old started our midweek clash against Crystal Palace but was a notable omission from the side that travelled to the Etihad. The Uruguayan’s absence was down to an injury that he sustained in training.
“He had to come off [in] training, he didn’t feel right unfortunately.”
Solskjaer, however, did not elaboate further on Cavani’s availaibility for the upcoming fixtures. United next face AC Milan in the Europa League midweek.
“He’s got a niggle again unfortunately. He had to come off training yesterday. We had to make a team without him.”
Ahead of the game, Pep Guardiola name-dropped Cavani as one of the players at United who could pose an issue for City. The striker’s absence should have theoretically given the Catalan manager less to worry about.
Unfortunately for him, Anthony Martial who replaced Cavani in the starting lineup had other plans. The 25-year-old put in a stellar performance and even won the penalty that gave United an early lead.
He was a constant menace for the City defence all night and the only thing missing from his game was a goal. The Frenchman could have had one had Ederson not pulled off a spectacular save.
