David de Gea asks Manchester United fans to remain calm as title talk builds
Speaking to MUTV (h/t Manchester United website), David de Gea does not want Manchester United fans to get carried away by talks of winning the title.
The title talks have built especially after a stunning late against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday. The game looked like it was going to end 0-0, until Marcus Rashford snatched a winner in the 93rd minute.
That result ensures that United go into 2021 second in the Premier League. They trail league leaders Liverpool by 3 points, who dropped points again this week in a 0-0 stalemate at St. James’ Park.
David de Gea, however, is not getting carried away yet. The Spaniard says that there is still a long way to go in the season and fans should remain ‘calm’.
“We need to be calm. There are still a lot of games to play, big games.”
He inevitably states the cliché of being focused on the next game, which is Aston Villa on new year’s day.
“We have to stay focused and not look forward too much but just look to the next game. So, Aston Villa is the most important thing now.”
Talking about the win against Wolves, de Gea expressed his happiness over the performance and said that late goal in a hard-fought game is the way to be at the top of the league.
The former Atletico Madrid stopper now says that recovering to play Villa on 1st January is the most important. United had a busy December as they played a total of 9 games over a period of 27 days.
There are also two massive derby games around the corner. United first face Manchester City in the semi-final of the League Cup on January 6th.
