Premier League rules that Manchester United against Aston Villa will go ahead as scheduled
A statement by the Premier League (h/t Birmingham Live) has stated that Premier League games will go ahead amidst speculation that matches, including Manchester United against Aston Villa, would be postponed.
The match is scheduled to be played at Old Trafford on new year’s day in 2021. Premier League has confirmed its intentions of continuing with football despite growing coronavirus concerns in the United Kingdom.
The last few weeks saw Prime Minister Boris Johnson include a large chunk of areas within ‘tier 4’ restrictions. Moreover, matches such as Everton against Manchester City were called off recently.
All of this led to the speculation that there might be a ‘circuit breaker’ in the Premier League that could see play being halted for a few weeks. (h/t Birmingham Live)
However, the Premier League has ended all that speculation in its new statement. The notice vehemently puts forth their desire to keep football going.
“The Premier League has not discussed pausing the season and has no plans to do so.”
The show goes on
It also mentions that the league is confident of its Covid-19 protocols which have the full backing of the government. It expresses the league’s trust in the member clubs to implement these protocols diligently.
“With the health of players and staff the priority, the League is also fully supportive of how clubs are implementing the protocols and rules.”
This news was expected by many and could be interpreted for its pros as well as cons. Clubs and leagues could stand to lose money if the Premier League comes to a halt again.

However, if protocols do continue to be implemented properly, then this is not a bad decision as of now.
In such a time of uncertainty, no one knows what the situation will be even a few days from now. Hence, changes could come to this ruling if the situation worsens in the future.
