Solskjaer reveals why he chose Henderson over De Gea vs Sheffield United
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sprung a surprise when he started Dean Henderson over David de Gea against Sheffield United yesterday.
The Spaniard is United’s first-choice keeper and has looked in good form of late. Coming on the back of a clean sheet against Manchester city, his absence at Bramall Lane was unexpected.
Not for Solskjaer, however. According to The Express, the Norwegian had made up his mind regarding the fixture much earlier. Having spent two seasons on loan at Sheffield, a return to the Lane was a homecoming of sorts.
“It’s one I had pencilled in for him early on.”
Solskjaer believes Henderson is ready to start in goal for United and the decision to play him yesterday is a testament to that faith in his preparedness.
“Dean is ready as well now to take these games on because he’s played well when he’s played.”
In the end, the match saw Henderson put in a Jekyll and Hyde performance. He was responsible for giving away the ball that led to Sheffield’s opener in the fifth minute.
United rallied to hit back and went 3-1 up before David McGoldrick scored his second of the night to give the Blades hope late on.
Henderson meanwhile had the last laugh as he made a stoppage-time stop to ensure we left the pitch with all three points.
The verdict
Speaking after the game, Solskjaer praised Henderson and claimed he passed the test of resilience. (h/t MEN)
Henderson’s ability to not let his early error get to him and instead put up a strong performance has earned him the plaudits from Solskjaer.
“He has probably been looking forward to coming back here and to get from that start shows his character for the rest of the game.”
