Manchester United fans take to Twitter to lambast Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire has certainly improved the Manchester United defence. However, he has not had the same colossal effect as a Virgil van Dijk.

The Englishman’s penchant to get nutmegged or make an error is likely to keep him out of the list of the best centre-backs in world football.

With Chelsea and Leicester City both losing, the onus was on United to take advantage. They were seconds away from doing just that.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial helped us overturn an early Stuart Armstrong strike. With the game deep into stoppage time, Southampton scored from a corner to ensure we stay fifth.

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire came in for criticism for his performance against Southampton
Harry Maguire was stranded as Southampton equalized against Manchester United

Harry Maguire was caught in no man’s land and was left powerless as Michael Obafemi was at hand to guide the ball home. The pictures of the goal ridiculously seemed to suggest that Maguire was marking Aaron Wan-Bissaka, his own teammate.

But the reality is that he was caught behind the defender and was left with nowhere to go. However, it does not paint a good picture of the world’s most expensive defender.

As the skipper and one of our best headers of the ball, Maguire should have done well for Southampton’s equalizer. The fact that he got caught behind his own players shows an acute lack of tactical understanding.

Better is expected from a United captain. Maguire still has ways to go. A number of fans took to Twitter to express their dismay and anger at the skipper’s performance. We take a look ay a few of them below.
