Mark Schwarzer tips Dean Henderson to replace David de Gea at Manchester United

As reported by Metro, former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has backed Dean Henderson to replace David de Gea as Manchester United’s No.1, after the Spaniard’s latest error against Tottenham.

De Gea has come under fire after failing to stop Steven Bergwijn’s effort in Friday’s game against Tottenham. The 29-year-old, one of the best goalkeepers to have played in the Premier League without a doubt, has become increasingly error-prone over the past 18 months or so.

His howler had cost us against Everton prior to the suspension of football. And once again on Friday, the conceded goal put us on the backfoot against Tottenham.

In contrast, Henderson, who is currently out on loan at Sheffield United, has emerged as the best custodian in the Premier League. The Englishman secured his 11th clean sheet of the season against Aston Villa earlier this week.

And now, Schwarzer, speaking to BBC5Live (h/t Metro), has claimed that the goalkeeping situation will ‘come to head’ this summer with Henderson waiting in the wings.

“It will come to a head, when you’ve got Dean Henderson playing so well at Sheffield United and he’s made it clear he won’t sit on the bench.”

It will be interesting to see what Solskjaer and the club hierarchy goes about the goalkeeping conundrum next season. But one thing is certain. Henderson has proven he is more than ready to step into De Gea’s shoes at Old Trafford.
