Manchester United offer Angel Gomes £1.5million a year
According to the Telegraph, Manchester United are prepared to offer talented starlet Angel Gomes £1.5million a year amidst interest from Chelsea.
The 19-year-old’s contract at United will expire on June 30. He is yet to agree on a new deal after rejecting an offer of £20,000-a-week in January.
Held in high regard at Carrington, Gomes is seen by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer s one of United’s top prospects. With time running out, the club have now offered him a lucrative new deal rather than lose him for free.
According to the report, the new deal will net him almost £30,000 a week. This includes bonuses for appearances, goals, and trophies won. Gomes is currently on a £17,000-a-week contract.
United hope the boost in pay will convince the England U-20 international to commit to the club. It was the case with Dutch forward Tahith Chong, who was a target for Italian giants Inter Milan.
Chong was also out of contract this summer. Speculation was rife before United tied him down to a new deal. They hope Gomes will not follow his lead.
A prodigy?
The attacking midfielder made his first-team debut at 16 and was United’s young player of the year in 2018. He has attracted interest from European giants such as Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Borussia Dortmund. (h/t Daily Mail)
Versatile enough to play in a variety of positions, Gomes has made 10 appearances for the United senior squad. He has also made a number of appearances for England Youth teams from the Under-16 to the Under-20 levels.
Gomes is keen to feature more and has appointed super-agent Pini Zahavi to help engineer a move. Zahavi is believed to have held talks with Chelsea transfer chief Marina Granovskaia. (h/t Daily Mail)
