Smalling joined Roma on loan last summer and has excelled in Italy, emerging as one of the best defenders in the Serie A.
A key cog in Fonseca’s team, the England international has featured in 32 matches in all competitions this term, chipping in with a couple of goals too.
Impressed heavily by how he has settled in, Roma are keen on securing his services on a permanent basis in the summer. Manager Fonseca has now insisted he will try everything in his power to get the deal over the line. (h/t ESPN)
“I will do everything I can to keep him at Roma next year too. I know he wants to stay, let’s see what happens.”
Fonseca further went on to praise Smalling’s leadership abilities, claiming that he has become a leader on the field and in the dressing room within a short span of time. (h/t ESPN)
Fonseca also hailed Smalling for adapting so quickly to the ways of Italian football, while also lauding the 30-year-old’s professionalism. (h/t ESPN)
Moreover, Smalling’s resurrection in Italy has seen him attract a lot of admirers in England as well. The likes of Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in signing him.
