Manchester United want £18m for Chris Smalling
According to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United are holding firm on their asking price of £18m for veteran defender Chris Smalling amid AS Roma interest.
Smalling has been with Manchester United since the summer of 2010. He was a regular in the starting XI for most of his stint at the club. But last summer saw him join AS Roma on loan following the arrival of Harry Maguire.
The 30-year-old excelled during his year-long stint in the Italian capital, establishing himself as a key member of the Roma team that finished fifth in the Serie A standings.
Smalling is now back at United. But he remains intent on securing a return to the Serie A giants ahead of the upcoming campaign. Roma too have been keen on taking back the England international. (h/t Daily Star)
However, the matter of agreeing to a transfer fee with Manchester United is proving to be a problem for the Giallorossi. As per the report, Roma last made an offer of around £11m plus bonuses.
But Manchester United continue to demand £18m for the English defender. However, there is a feeling that the two clubs will arrive at a compromise, with Roma set to up their offer to £13.5m plus bonuses.
