Man United enter the race for La Liga defensive star with £68m release clause

Manchester United enter the race for Sevilla star Diego Carlos

According to Spanish publication Marca via SportWitness (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United have joined the race for Diego Carlos.

We will have to go head to head against two of our biggest rivals Liverpool and Manchester City if we are to land the Brazilian defender.

Carlos is a player United will be familiar with, having faced him in last season’s Europa League semifinals. One of Sevilla’s best players this past campaign, the 27-year-old helped them to a top-four finish and Europa League glory.

The Spanish giants were initially holding form at the player’s £68m release clause being met. However, according to the report, they are now willing to negotiate on a lower price.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring in a partner for Harry Maguire. Whether Carlos should be that man is a matter of debate.

A no-nonsense player who is a daunting physical presence, Carlos is also a force to be reckoned with in the air. He does, however, tend to give away unnecessary fouls.

In fact, he gave away penalties in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final of the Europa League. We should know since we were the beneficiary in the semi-finals.

This could be more of a liability given the close run nature of Premier League games. United need a defender who is dependable. It would be a stretch to call Carlos that.

The fact that Liverpool and City are yet to bid for Carlos could work in our favour. Furthermore, The Merseysiders have all but ruled out big signings while City are believed to be keen on Kalidoy Koulibaly.

This could give United the opportunity to make a move for Carlos. However, whether he is the man to improve our backline or not remains to be seen.
