Chelsea are interested in Manchester United star Sergio Romero

According to The Athletic (h/t Mirror), Chelsea are considering a swoop for Manchester United star Sergio Romero.

The 33-year-old was brought to Old Trafford by former boss Louis van Gaal in 2015. During this time he has been a dependable understudy to David de Gea.

Romero has impressed when given the opportunity and is amongst the best backup keepers in the league. In fact, his record of 39 clean sheets from 61 games is a testament to that.

Despite his performances, the return of the young and upcoming Dean Henderson will have pushed him further down the pecking order.

The 23-year-old returns to United after enhancing his reputation while on loan at Sheffield United. He has recently signed a new contract and is expected to fight for the starting spot with De Gea.

This does not augur well for Romero who is keen to make the Argentina squad for the 2021 Copa America. He has not represented the South American giants since 2018 and sitting on the bench will hardly improve his situation. (h/t MEN)

Chelsea on the other hand are in need of a dependable keeper. Kepa Arrizabalaga has been a constant source of frustration for Frank Lampard who is keen to bring in a new keeper.

Romero has just 12 months to go on his United contract, but theclub does have the option of extending it by another year.

United value the Argentine between £8m and £10m. Selling a 33-uear-old on the fringes of the first team will be good business for the club.

Romero is a solid and dependable player. There is little doubt that he will boost Chelsea’s defence.

While he may strengthen a direct rival, it must not be forgotten that he was a loyal player for us when called upon.

At 33, it is possible that the 2021 Copa America would be one of his last major international tournaments. Denying him the opportunity to do so would be a cruel way of repaying a loyal man.
