Paul Pogba opens up on his United departure in 2012
Speaking on the United podcast (h/t MEN), French superstar Paul Pogba has opened up on the conversations he had with his family prior to leaving Manchester United in 2012.
The talented midfielder had arrived at Old Trafford from Le Havre just two years earlier before he chose to move to Juventus. His decision to do so was met with criticism by Sir Alex Ferguson, who accused him of lacking respect.
Pogba revealed that his brother, a United fan, was angrier than him at the lack of game time he received at Old Trafford. He backed Pogba’s decision to leave and deemed him good enough to be playing for United.
“No, go. You can play in this team. If they don’t want you here, go somewhere else. They will see.”
The player’s mother too concurred with his decision to leave but also predicted that he would return one day.
“My mother always told me: ‘You will go somewhere but come back.”
That prophecy would come true four years later when the Frenchman arrived at United in a club-record move worth £93.2million.
Pogba believed he had unfinished work at Old Trafford and was happy to return. It proved to be a triumphant homecoming as he helped United to a cup double in his first season back.
It has been a different story this season. Pogba has been out injured and has not played for United since December.
