Manchester United were interested in Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the summer, according to the Daily Star.

The Serbian is one of the highest rated players in the Serie A but remained at Lazio this season.

Now Lazio chairman Claudio Lotto has claimed that it would be difficult to keep the 23-year-old due to the financial powers of other clubs.

The chairman was quoted by the Daily Star saying:

“Nowadays it’s very complicated for a player to tie himself to a club for his entire career.

“However, Lazio are doing well, our players show great affection for the club and perhaps they’re persuaded to stay for what we’re doing on an infrastructural level, with the recent renovation of our training ground.

“But unfortunately, Lazio don’t have the economic power of Barcelona and Real Madrid, so if a once-in-a-lifetime offer comes in, it’d pose a problem or us.”

The report adds that Lazio slapped a £100m price-tag on the 23-year-old in the summer and that could have played a part in no one signing the midfielder.

Milinkovic-Savic has just one goal and one assist from 11 Serie A games this season but the Eagles are doing alright in the fourth position.

There is no doubt that United could do with some additions to the side but we shouldn’t go crazy and spend over the top for the 23-year-old.

The Serie A club would still want a large transfer sum for their midfielder, and it will be interesting to see just who wins the race for Milinkovic-Savic.
