John Murtough has made a discovery in Saudi Arabia which spells trouble for Manchester United’s plan to sell star players
John Murtough recently took a trip to Saudi Arabia ahead of Manchester United’s plans to offload players in the Middle East, as reported by The Athletic. The Red Devils were planning on saying goodbye to a bunch of players this January.
Anthony Martial who has been abysmal for the club this season was one such player who was going to be offloaded. Throughout 19 appearances, the Frenchman has only recorded two goals and two assists for the team (Transfermarkt).
Former Real Madrid duo Raphael Varane and Casemiro were also surrounded by talks of a transfer in January. However, Ten Hag will be hesitant to sell them both because of their quality on the pitch.
Another reason behind them not being sold is a lack of suitors in Saudi Arabia. Earlier it was reported that Manchester United could move these players to the Saudi Pro League. But, Murtough’s discovery has put an end to those plans.
The Saudi Pro League places a limit on the amount of foreign players that teams can have at a time. Most teams that expressed an interest in these players have already filled their squads to the brim with other foreigners.
So an exit will not be found via Saudi Arabia. The club’s best bet at this time is to be patient with Varane and Casemiro and do their best at offloading Jadon Sancho. Even selling off Antony will not be a blow to their strength right now.
