Manchester United mid-season review: Ranking Erik Ten Hag’s summer signings

Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United have had one of the worst opening halves in club history this time around. We’re not even in January and the Red Devils have already had to give up on their dreams of European glory.

Moreover, the team has also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Newcastle United, the same team that they beat to lift the cup last year.

All the hope that Erik Ten Hag gave to the Manchester United fans last season has slowly fizzled out. It is safe to say that the Dutchman has not been having an easy time at the helm.

If we compare the current Manchester United squad to their form under Erik Ten Hag from last year, it might just bring tears to the eyes of a few people.

The Red Devils were a force to be reckoned with last season. They finished third in the Premier League and even won the Carabao Cup. Now, you can’t even notice a glimpse of their form from last season.

Ten Hag made a lot of investments before the season kicked off. While some of them have paid off others have definitely not been in his favour.

Let’s have a look at how Erik Ten Hag and his major summer signings have fared so far for Manchester United this season.

6. Sergio Reguilon

Sergio Reguilon has shown up for Manchester United whenever they have needed him. The only reason he is so low on the list is due to his limited playing time.

The 26-year-old often ends up playing second fiddle to the likes of Luke Shaw. Give him some more playing time and he can grow to be an amazing option for any team.

5. Jonny Evans

35-year-old Jonny Evans has been somewhat awry with his performances for Manchester United. However, we do have to mention that his presence as a veteran is invaluable to the team.

He was dealing with a hamstring injury earlier this season and even though he has recovered he hasn’t featured much. His ranking is a result of his inconsistent health and limited playing time.

4. Sofyan Amrabat

Sofyan Amrabat is just a disappointing signing for Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United. Over 17 appearances the Morrocan national has not been able to make any impact at all.

He has made a couple of quality passes against Galatasaray while also winning 4 duels (fot.mob). That has been his crowning achievement and it looks like it’s going to stay that way for the time being because according to Sky Sports, Ten Hag will be looking to ship Amrabat at the end of the season.

3. Andre Onana

Fans can’t decide what to think about Andre Onana. Sometimes he acts like the best goalkeeper in the world. His full potential was on display during Manchester United’s match against Liverpool.

Then there are games like the ones we had in the Champions League. His careless mistakes against teams like Galatasaray were one of the major reasons that United fell out of the European competition.

2. Mason Mount

Many were looking forward to Mason Mount’s arrival at Manchester United. He was thought to be the solution to The Red Devils’ creative woes.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t been featuring a lot recently as he recovers from a calf injury. We know of his quality so it’s too soon to say anything about his performance until he’s been given a proper chance to display that. Now, a comeback could be on the way as he has recently been spotted in training.

1. Rasmus Hojlund

The Dutch striker has just scored his first Premier League goal. This might not be enough to justify his rank at number one but his performance in the Champions League sure is.

At just 21 Rasmus Hojlund is already leading the Champions League in goals with five goals scored (UEFA). Sadly the young striker will not get to add to the tally because Manchester United are no longer a part of it.

Rasmus Hojlund has recorded six goals for Manchester United over 23 appearances.

Manchester United are on the brink of chaos. Any additional shortcomings will prove to be catastrophic for Erik Ten Hag. As January approaches the team finally has a chance to set things right.

The Old Trafford management must make the right calls in January if the team wants any hope of a top four finish.
