Inter Milan are contemplating a move for the out-of-form Manchester United forward Anthony Martial in the January transfer window. Martial is currently playing in the final season of his current contract, making him a free agent during the summer.

The 28-year-old has faced severe scrutiny this season for his poor form, coinciding with the overall struggle of the club. The Red Devils are currently sixth in the Premier League table after a poor start to the season.

United have also crashed out of Europe after finishing fourth in the Champions League Group A, adding to their misery. During this season, the big summer signing Rasmus Hojlund has relegated the French international to a backup role.

However, Martial has failed to capitalise on the opportunities whenever he received game time this season. United manager Erik ten Hag opted to deploy the 28-year-old against Bournemouth to rest the recently recovered Hojlund.

Martial made no impact during the game and the coach substituted him in the 56th minute. The Frenchman faced loud sarcastic cheers from the Old Trafford fanbase during the substitution, a reaction that irked the manager.

Ten Hag defended Martial in the post-match interview (h/t Mirror) after the 0-3 loss to Bournemouth. He said:

“Two weeks ago against Everton he played a very good game so he has absolutely the competences & abilities to play, so I don’t think it is fair, after a performance like this, to go to one player. We as a group failed all together.”

Martial is currently playing his ninth season at Old Trafford, since signing as a teenager in 2015. United broke the record for highest transfer fee paid for a teenager to bring in the Frenchman from AS Monaco. The broken record heightened expectations for the 28-year-old.

Many fans and football experts have criticized Martial for his poor contributions over the year, hounded by injuries and inconsistencies. The French international has made 317 appearances for United, contributing with 90 goals and 55 assists.

Sport Witness (h/t Manchester Evening News) reported that Inter are thinking about making a January move for Martial. The Red Devils are considering the option of triggering the one-year extension that the 28-year-old’s contract possesses.

We think United should sell Martial at any price as Ten Hag need to raise funds to sign players. The Red Devils need to prioritise signing the players that will add more to the core strength of the squad.

Meanwhile, Financial Fair Play rules restrict United, necessitating the need to raise funds for signing crucial players. A transfer deal will be mutually beneficial for the club and the player who need a new start to reignite his career.
