“Have to be accountable” – Erik ten Hag expected Manchester United players to take more responsibility

Speaking in an interview as quoted by the Mirror, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag told his players to take “more responsibility” despite winning the game.

Scott McTominay‘s two goals in the waning seconds helped Manchester United defeat Brentford, who seemed destined for victory after taking the lead in the first half. The Red Devils were in danger of suffering their third consecutive Premier League home loss.

Erik ten Hag said after the game:

“When you give a goal away so easily – you can’t do that at our level, we have to do better. More of them have to take more responsibility, they have to be accountable, otherwise it’s difficult to win games. Opponents will benefit from it. But then we had the personality and character to come back. We made our own luck and this can be a turning point, but we know we have to change and reset.”

Ten Hag then made a convincing argument. Particularly when the opposing team has the ball, there has been anarchy at the back. Since the beginning of the year, United has experienced difficulties with this. Once more, Andre Onana was unable to block the shot, which we believe should have been stopped.

Victor Lindelof’s poor clearance of the ball which initially led to the goal was another mistake that must have caught the eyes of Ten Hag. On the other hand, Casemiro‘s wrongly judged pass was the initial trigger for United conceding the goal. Mistakes like these need to be prevented at all costs.

The same is shockingly true with Marcus Rashford. Rashford was hooked after 68 minutes in the loss to Galatasaray after being removed in the 77th minute of the defeat to Crystal Palace.

He managed to last 62 minutes in this game. It’s difficult to tell if he lacks interest or lacks confidence. In either case, his contributions to United’s cause are diminishing rapidly. There has been a nosedive in his performance if we compare him with his last season’s stats.

Ten Hag is currently in his second year in charge after a strong first year that resulted in fresh hope. However, things seem to have gone backwards now.

However, due to significant summer spending, he is already feeling pressure this season. He is hopeful that the morale-boosting victory over Brentford will prove to be a turning point.
