Manchester United plans in jeopardy as release clause hinders Lois Openda’s pursuit.

Express reports that Manchester United are retracting their interest in RB Leipzig star Lois Openda after the revelation of his release clause detail.

The Belgium international joined German side Leipzig during the summer transfer window in 2023. Openda has been impressive for Leipzig and was under consideration by United manager Erik ten Hag.

The 23-year-old has appeared in 10 matches so far for Leipzig while contributing to five goals and two assists in all competitions. Openda’s fantastic form included a goal against Manchester City in the Champions League game.

Sky Sports Germany reported that the German side negotiated a £69m release clause for Openda when they signed him. The release clause will not become active until 2025 which gives Leipzig time to work with the player.

The Belgian is versatile and despite favoring his natural position as a centre forward, he can play on either wing. Despite occasional offside infractions, the 23-year-old possesses incredible pace and off-the-ball movement.

Openda likes to move deep into the midfield to help in the build-up instead of staying forward. The Belgian is a strong dribbler with the passing ability to link up play and create threats.

United signed Rasmus Hojlund from Serie A side Atalanta to lead their attacking lines. The Danish international has performed impressively despite the team’s struggle with form.

Ten Hag is looking to add another striker to compete with Hojlund or replace him in case of injury. The 20-year-old has no significant backup in the Red Devils’ squad who can help the team in his absence.

The Red Devils require depth in their squad with Champions League football raising the stakes this season. United have faced vulnerabilities in a lot of areas and they may think about prioritizing them over the competition for Hojlund. We have to wait and see if any clubs will test Leipzig’s resolve for Openda. However, it seems he will be staying with the German side for now to build on his exciting start.
