Chelsea are gearing up to potentially outbid Manchester United in the pursuit of RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda
Chelsea are looking to splash the cash once again in order to beat rival Manchester United for Lois Openda.
The RB Leipzig forward joined the German club during the summer transfer window. Openda has enjoyed a good start to the new campaign at the club with consistently strong performances.
The Belgian has appeared in 10 games for Leipzig so far and contributed to five goals and two assists. Openda opened his goal account in the Champions League for Leipzig against defending champions Manchester City.
United signed Rasmus Hojlund from Serie A side Atalanta during the summer. The Danish international has made an instant impression on the Old Trafford crowd with his solid performances.
However, United are looking to bolster their frontline as they do not have a significant backup option for Hojlund. Openda has the ability and skills to be both competitive and the backup for Hojlund at the same time.
The 23-year-old Leipzig forward has the ability to play alongside Hojlund in various positions as well. Openda is very versatile and capable of playing on either flank for his team.
The German club negotiated a £69m release clause for Openda when they signed the Belgian. The release clause will not be active until 2025 which gives Leipzig the power to negotiate the price.
Fichajes reports that Leipzig have set an asking price of €90 million for Openda. The German side understand that the 23-year-old has a much higher ceiling when it comes to his potential.
Chelsea have dominated the transfer market since Todd Boehly took over the London club in the summer of 2022. The Blues have already passed £1bn spending in the transfer market under Boehly with no hint of stopping.

Boehly has shown he is not shy of spending inflated amounts on players who are yet to prove themselves. United, at the same time, are facing restrictions through financial fair play (FFP) rules but they’re still willing to recruit. We think if Chelsea decides to challenge United for the Belgian, the Red Devils are better off looking elsewhere. Rest assured, Openda will get ample amount of opportunity to move to a top club if he continues to dazzle.
