Manchester United legend Paul Scholes backs Bruno Fernandes in the new captaincy role
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes gave his insights about the captaincy choices manager Erik ten Hag faced after he made Bruno Fernandes the captain of the Red Devils before the start of the new season.
The Dutch manager stripped Harry Maguire from captaincy after he struggled to hold his place within the starting XI of the team. Fernandes is a sure starter when fit and at the very least would be a constant presence on the field.
Marcus Rashford was hinted at as a suitable candidate by some people on social media. However, Scholes is completely behind the choice Ten Hag made.

Speaking at the YouTube show FIVE, Scholes said:
“All of a sudden there are three or four players in that team who are capable of being captain, and I think Bruno is probably the right choice because he seems to be the one, they all look up to.”
Fernandes’s captaincy came to criticism after the poor start of United’s Premier League campaign. The side is currently in 11th position with two losses against Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
The Dutch boss defended his choice for captaincy, stating that the attacking midfielder’s desire and quality make him the best choice. Scholes believes that Fernandes has done a fantastic job so far despite the unfortunate results the team has suffered. He said:
“He’s done a fantastic job when he has been captain and he looks a leader, he’s the one that’s always having a go, always trying to rally his team. I think it’s a great choice.”

Fernandes is fulfilling his international duties with Portugal. He will be playing against Slovakia on Friday and Luxembourg on Tuesday for the Euro 2024 qualification.
Scholes made valid points based on his personal experience. United team has multiple leaders in the locker room and Fernandes seems like the best possible choice. Whether he will rise to the occasion remains to be seen.
