Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes does not have the right attitude of a leader, claims Micah Richards
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards (who burst onto the scene) feels Bruno Fernandes does not have the right attitude to be the captain of Manchester United.
Fernandes has copped up some criticism following the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur for asking the referee to apologise for not giving a penalty.
The Portuguese international, who was given the captain’s armband this summer by Erik ten Hag, does have a tendency to moan at his teammates on the field.
Richards seems to have picked those traits up while identifying the weaknesses in the 28-year-old’s captaincy. Here’s what he said (h/t Evening Standard):
“Pellistri made a run, Fernandes didn’t see him and [so] he made a different run but because he wasn’t where [Fernandes] wanted him to be, he’s going off at Pellestri.
“It’s every time. I saw an interview with him the other day and he said he needs to be emotional when he performs because it makes him play better. But I feel like his body language on the pitch is disturbing the rest of the team and it’s just not a good look at all. It’s pathetic at times.”
It is not news to us that Fernandes has those sorts of moments on the field. One would think ten Hag has thought through that when handing him the captaincy.
So, let’s trust the manager’s decision on this one and hope that it works out. It is not a nice thing to see when the captain of the team is throwing arms around when things aren’t going all smooth and rosy.
Perhaps, Ten Hag has seen something in the 28-year-old that he brings in the dressing room which is important to becoming a captain of Manchester United.
It is still early in the season and things can turn around pretty quickly. We can go back to last season when United lost the first two games and then went on a long unbeaten run in all competitions.

At least, they have got three points from the first two games this time around. The next game is at home to Nottingham Forest. It is a sort of match where United would be backed to get a few goals in and build that confidence.
