Jonny Evans unsure of Manchester United future with deal expiring soon
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans ‘does not know’ whether he will stay at the Old Trafford side beyond his current short-term contract, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The defender put pen to paper on a temporary deal at the Red Devils to feature in the pre-season. For now, the Northern Ireland international is tied down to the club for at least two more weeks.
However, he will not be on United’s books until the end of August as things stand. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford side will opt to keep the 35-year-old beyond the existing terms.
The Red Devils are yet to decide on what to do with Evans. During the recent friendlies, the centre-back has put in some encouraging performances. He has featured against the likes of Olympique Lyon, Wrexham, Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Bilbao.
Next up, United will take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the first game of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign on 14 August at home.
The Northern Irish national spent a decade at the Old Trafford side, having made his way through the youth ranks. Subsequently, the defender ended up making 198 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.
Then, in the summer of 2015, Evans was sold to West Bromwich Albion. A few years later, the centre-back landed in Leicester City and spent five seasons at the Foxes before becoming a free agent this summer.
At United, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane seem to be Erik ten Hag’s go-to partnership. As a result, Harry Maguire found himself on the bench a lot last season.

Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see the England international leave the club in the coming weeks. In that case, Evans could be a cheap alternative to add reinforcements to our backline.
