Marcus Rashford considered leaving Manchester United before the former Ajax boss stepped in

Marcus Rashford has revealed that he considered leaving Manchester United before Erik ten Hag assumed the managerial role last summer.

Earlier this month, as stated by the club’s official website, the English attacker signed a new contract worth £300,000 per week at Old Trafford, extending his commitment to the Red Devils until the summer of 2028.

However, the 25-year-old has admitted that he considered departing his beloved club, as Paris Saint-Germain showed interest in him around the same time last year.

His decision to stay proved pivotal as he went on to have the finest season of his career under the management of Ten Hag.

Under the guidance of the Dutch manager, Rashford experienced a resurgence in form, scoring an impressive total of 30 goals for United last season. The team achieved a third-place finish in the Premier League, clinched the Carabao Cup, and made it to the FA Cup final.

This remarkable turnaround was in stark contrast to the previous season, 2021-22, where the team struggled under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

During this difficult period, the Academy graduate’s performance suffered, managing to score only five goals, leading him to consider ending his long-standing 18-year association with United.

During an interview conducted while on United’s tour of the US, the experienced attacker confirmed that he indeed contemplated leaving the club last summer.

While speaking to ESPN, he said:

Before the manager came maybe a little bit.

“Before the manager came, maybe a little bit. But it’s football, it happens. Everything is going to happen for a reason and he came to the club at the right time for me, the timing worked out. I wasn’t enjoying my football as much as I should be, as much I was used to enjoying it.”

Putting an end to all speculations about his future, Rashford put pen to paper and signed a fresh five-year contract with his boyhood club.

This new deal has made him one of the highest-earning players at the club, and as a result, he is expected to shoulder more responsibilities in the upcoming season.

As Rashford enters the prime of his career, he now stands as one of the senior figures in the squad. It is a crucial time for the England international to step up and lead the team by setting a strong example for his teammates.

United are nearing the completion of the signing of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund. The potential front-three combination of Rashford, Hojlund, and Antony is expected to pose a significant threat to any opposing team.

Ten Hag will be hoping that the in-form striker does not rest on his laurels. Rashford is showing his unwavering commitment to the club by putting in decent performances on the ongoing USA tour.

His goal would be to achieve peak condition ahead of the opening weekend of the 2023-24 Premier League season, where United will face Wolves at Old Trafford on the 15th of August.
