Manchester United have ‘identified’ Brighton & Hove Albion star Evan Ferguson as a potential signing for the summer of 2024, according to Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The 18-year-old only recently put pen to paper on a new four-year contract at the East Sussex-based club. As things stand, there is growing interest in the striker from within the Premier League.

In the previous transfer window, the youngster was linked with a move to the Red Devils. But it failed to materialise. However, the Old Trafford side are still keeping tabs on the Ireland international.

Nick Cox, United’s academy director, termed Ferguson a ‘£50 million-plus mistake‘ after the Manchester-based club failed to sign him during the forward’s trial in his younger days.

Tottenham Hotspur also have the 18-year-old on their radar. Brighton feel the Irish national could be worth £100 million in the future and have likened him to Spurs’ Harry Kane.

Ferguson has broken onto the scene in fine fashion in the current campaign. The youngster has made 23 appearances for the Seagulls in all competitions this season, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists.

United’s front line evidently lacks depth in the number nine position. Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst are the only two natural strikers at Erik ten Hag’s disposal as things stand.

Unfortunately, the French national has been inconsistent in the current campaign and his injury issues have not helped the cause either. On the other hand, the Holland international is only on loan at the Red Devils from Burnley until the end of the season.

Therefore, our attack seemingly required a few reinforcements next summer. However, it is wise for the Old Trafford side to wait a year and then see whether pursuing Ferguson’s signature is worth it.
