Manchester United are interested in signing Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili
According to Givemesport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are interested in signing Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili with a view to replacing David de Gea as the first team’s goalkeeper.
De Gea had one of the worst games in his long-standing career at United in the embarrassing loss to Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League. It laid bare the Spanish keeper’s deficiencies in the game and why he is not the ideal keeper in the manner modern football is played out from the back.
While being an amazing shot-stopper, his inability to play out from the back adding to his failure to be a strong personality in defending the box has cost United numerous times.
Erik ten Hag wants to implement a certain style of play at the club in accordance with a possession-based philosophy, for which a goalkeeper comfortable playing with his feet is a must.
Just looking at the examples of Allison and Ederson and how they transformed Liverpool and Manchester City upon their arrival shows the importance of having the right personality between the sticks.
De Gea has been a great servant to the club but now is the time when the club needs to go and find a replacement who fits in better with the manner in which Ten Hag wants his team to play.
Mamardashvii, who joined Valencia, just this season has been earning rave reviews for his performances and especially his ability to play out from the back.
While Valencia have not been upto their usual best this season in La Liga, the Georgian keeper has been a shining light and many predict a big move for the player despite just recently joining the Spanish outfit.
