Tottenham Hotspur join Manchester United in race for Valencia star Giorgi Mamardashvili
According to the Spanish publication Marca (h/t The Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Valencia star Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer transfer window. Both English clubs are in the market for a backup shot-stopper, and they could battle it out with each other for his signature.
Erik ten Hag has already named Mamardashvili the perfect option to support David de Gea moving forward. Dean Henderson has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, which has played a part in leading to this situation. However, Man United would now need to deal with Tottenham, who have entered the fray.
Antonio Conte is hoping that Spurs’ relationship with the Spanish club after facilitating a loan for Bryan Gil would be enough to gain an advantage over the Red Devils. Champions League football could be another factor with the North London side “already thinking” about replacing Hugo Lloris, which could perhaps prompt them to solidify their interest.
Mamardashvili to Man Utd or Spurs?
Mamardashvili has been terrific for the La Liga side last season, having joined them on loan from Dinamo Tbilisi the previous summer. However, Valencia quickly triggered the option to buy him permanently following his excellent performances for them in between the posts.
The Georgian international has been one of the standout performers for Jose Bordalas’s side despite the team enduring a largely difficult campaign. He has garnered ten clean sheets to his name from 23 appearances this term, conceding only 24 goals across all competitions.
Bordalas’ team could be forced to part ways with the 21-year-old due to their poor financial condition. They need to raise £59.5million this summer and could decide to make a quick profit with the goalkeeper to help balance their books.
The Manchester club could be handed a massive opportunity to future proof their goalkeeping position by signing Mamardashvili this summer. Since ten Hag is keen to get his hands on the shot-stopper, the board must do their best to bring the youngster to Old Trafford in any way possible.

Conte’s side could cause issues as they are in a far better state than us at this moment. However, they have recently completed the signing of Fraser Forster this summer which could potentially see them give up in their pursuit of Mamardashvili.
Then again, perhaps Tottenham could be looking at Mamardashvili as a long term option to replace Lloris, but the competition in the goalkeeping role at N17 could lend us a hand in this race. If Henderson does depart, we can propose a more prominent role for the La Liga ace, but whether that will play a major role or not remains to be seen.
