Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag looking for a summer overhaul with up to 15 players expected to be put for sale

According to the Guardian, Manchester United Erik ten Hag is looking at a clear-out at the club with up to fifteen players expected to be put up for sale.

United’s embarrassing 3-0 loss to Sevilla in the Uefa Europa Cup quarter-final laid bare the deficiencies in the squad and gave us a stark reality check of how far we are from competing at the top.

Ten Hag did not have the luxury of naming his preferred starting eleven with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Bruno Fernandes all out of contention while Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw started on the bench having just recovered from recent injuries.

It showed the difference in the team once the key first-team players are missing and how the backup options are just not that good.

His first season with United has given Ten Hag a fair idea of the players that could be included in his long-term project and the players that will be allowed to leave.

Now it is claimed that up to 15 players could be up for sale with Ten Hag looking to add more quality for the upcoming season.

Out of the 15 players that have been listed, there are many known names including Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Scott Mctominay, Fred and Victor Lindelof.

It is pretty clear that Maguire’s transfer from Leicester City has been nothing short of a disaster and has put us two steps behind, it would be in the best interest of all parties if the club’s current captain is moved in the summer.

Yesterday was just another example of why he is not up to the standard required to play for United notwithstanding being the captain of the team and his performances over the two legs were a key factor in our loss.

On the other hand, Sancho has failed to truly kickstart his career at United even after the completion of almost two seasons and looks like a shadow of the player seen at Borussia Dortmund. Ten Hag has been patient with him but the winger has to start delivering soon or could see his future at Old Trafford cut short with United keen to generate money from outgoings for future signings.

The case of Martial is a bizarre one. A talented footballer who has failed to live up to the hype shown when he made the move to United eight years ago. Niggling injuries alongside a weak temperament haven’t allowed the forward to kick on and many are starting to lose patience with Martial who could leave the club in the coming window.

Mctominay, Fred and Lindelof are good squad players or enablers to have till the squad is further improved over the coming seasons as one window would not be enough to make a complete overhaul.

The probability of the three leaving could be said to be not of utmost priority but with a number of humiliating losses suffered during the season, it is still not clear the direction the club takes with the mentioned players.

Rest of the players on the list include Donny van de Beek, Anthony Elanga, Dean Henderson and Brandon Williams. Alex Telles, Hannibal Mejbri and Eric Bailly while Phil Jones and Axel Tuenzebe are expected to leave on a free transfer. Hendo and Elanga are hopefully only sent out on a loan but the rest of the players aren’t really headed anywhere here.
