Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay hoping to add goals and assists to his game after Scotland heroics

Manchester United star Scott McTominay, who recently thrived for Scotland during the international break, hopes to add more goals and assists to his game.

The 26-year-old started for the Tartan Terriers against Cyprus and Spain in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. In both matches, the midfielder got a brace, winning 3-0 and 2-0, respectively.

Speaking to Viaplay (h/t Manchester Evening News) after his heroics versus La Furia Roja, McTominay hopes to do more of the same on a much more consistent basis.

“I like to both get in the box and sit and defend with my teammates as well. I know I can add more goals and assists to my name and I think the last two games have been a good example of that.”

Over the years, the 26-year-old has made his way through the youth ranks at United and has established himself in the senior squad over the years. The midfielder has also been a regular for the Scotland national team, garnering 39 caps up until now.

However, McTominay has been used in the two teams mostly for his defensive capabilities rather than his attacking prowess. The Scottish national has not bee able to get on the scoresheet a lot for the Red Devils.

In the current campaign, he has made 32 appearances in all competitions for the Old Trafford side, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Although, the 26-year-old has lost his place in the starting lineup under Erik ten Hag.

Casemiro’s arrival has seen the Dutch manager prefer the former Real Madrid star in the defensive midfield position. The Brazil international has been pivotal to the gaffer’s plans at United.

McTominay is seemingly suggesting playing a bit forward in the middle of the park. However, the 26-year-old has not shown a keen eye for a defensive splitting pass during his time with the Red Devils to be considered as an attacking outlet.

Ten Hag has the likes of Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes and Marcel Sabitzer to bring creativity to the midfield. Therefore, the Scotland international should feel forced to do more in the attacking third at the Old Trafford side.
