David de Gea summer replacement ‘strong possibility’ at Manchester United

In the upcoming transfer window, there is a strong possibility that Manchester United will sign a replacement for David de Gea, according to The Telegraph (Subscription Required) [h/t The Sun].

The Spain international’s current contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of the season (transfermarkt). Although, the Old Trafford side are holding talks with the 32-year-old over a new deal.

However, the Manchester-based club are monitoring other shot-stoppers simultaneously. It remains to be seen whether the shot-stopper will leave us next summer.

Brentford’s David Raya is the leading candidate as an alternate in between the sticks for United at the moment. However, Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are also eyeing the 27-year-old.

FC Porto’s Diogo Costa has also been on the Red Devils’ radar for some time now. The Portugal international has caught a lot of people’s attention with his performances in the current campaign.

De Gea made his way to the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. Over the years, the Spaniard has had moments where he has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

However, the 32-year-old has also had some rocky moments at United. But since the previous campaign, the shot-stopper has been in fine form.

De Gea had a shaky start to the campaign under Erik ten Hag. However, he has managed to turn things around with some clutch saves throughout the season. But the Dutch manager is seemingly keen on playing out from the back. In that regard, the Spaniard leaves a lot to be desired.

He does not look comfortable on the ball and demonstrated it in the 4-1 win over Real Betis in the Europa League, almost gifting the La Liga outfit the lead. Therefore, is the 32-year-old’s career at the Old Trafford side coming to an end? Only time will tell.
