Transfer News: Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo thought he was joining Manchester United in the summer
Liverpool winter signing Cody Gakpo thought he was joining Manchester United in the summer. The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for the 23-year-old Dutch forward.
Despite being linked with a move for us for most part of the summer, Erik ten Hag ultimately decided to bring in Antony instead of the 23-year-old. The forward, however, still expected the Red Devils to come back for him in the winter.
But after the former PSV Eindhoven man impressed at the World Cup, Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool pounced on him and managed to secure his signature as a late Christmas gift for their fans.
Now, the 23-year-old has lifted the lid on what happened and the forward thought that he was going to join United last summer (h/t The Sun).
“It was difficult this summer. It was a very intense period. I tried to find my peace but it was difficult. I thought I was going to Man United, but in the end it didn’t work out. Leeds came in. They are a good club but I asked myself should I really go there, and when you have a lot of doubts it is not good.”
It is really a shame that the Red Devils could not secure his signature. He has been one of the most in-form players this season, scoring 13 goals and registering another 17 assists in 24 appearances for the Eredivisie side in all competitions.
And now he has joined one of our biggest rivals, giving them a boost as both of us are trying to finish in the top four this season. The 23-year-old is yet to make his debut for the Reds, but could do so against Brentford later tonight (January 2).
Erik ten Hag needs to add a forward in his side. There is a lack of a natural striker in the team and while the Dutchman is primarily a winger, he can also play as a number nine or even as an attacking midfielder, whenever required.
