Erik ten Hag ‘frustrated’ at failed Manchester United move for Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven
Manchester United manager Erik ten hag is ‘frustrated’ at missing out on Cody Gakpo, who is set to join Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January, according to ESPN.
The Dutch manager is disheartened at seeing the 23-year-old make his way to Merseyside instead of signing for the Red Devils. However, the gaffer is optimistic about getting a short-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Just before the start of the 2022 World Cup, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner departed the club after his contract was terminated by mutual consent. Now, Ten Hag wants the club to find reinforcements for his squad.
Gakpo will sign for Liverpool in a deal that could potentially reach €50 million. United did not put an official offer on the table for the Holland international due to budget constraints.
The 23-year-old has been in fine form for both club and country in the current campaign. This season, the forward made 24 appearances in all competitions for PSV. He found the back of the net 13 times and provided 17 assists.
Gakpo was also brilliant in Qatar for the Netherlands. The 23-year-old scored in every group stage fixture for the Oranje. Louis van Gaal’s team made it to the quarter-finals but lost to eventual champions Argentina.
Jurgen Klopp’s team are currently sixth in the Premier League table, four points behind us. The Merseysiders now boast the Holland international alongside the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
As for United, we have only one natural striker in the squad after Ronaldo’s departure—Anthony Martial. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old has been on the sideline for most of the campaign.
