Erik ten Hag tells Cody Gakpo he is ‘perfect’ replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has told PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo that he would be the ‘perfect’ replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo at the club, according to The Mirror (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Dutch manager has had a conversation with the 23-year-old and told the forward that he is the one to replace the five-time Ballon d’Or winner at the Old Trafford side. Also, the Holland international could be handed the number seven shirt if he moves to Manchester.
Ten Hag is looking to continue rebuilding his squad. The gaffer could use his connections to convince Gakpo. The Dutch manager was in charge of the PSV academy more than 10 years ago and has kept a good relationship with the 23-year-old and his family.
The Red Devils were interested in bringing the forward to the club in the summer of 2023. However, in the end, a deal could not materialise.
However, now, with the departure of Ronaldo from United, the club has had to step up their pursuit of finding reinforcements. The 37-year-old left just before the start of the World Cup.
The former Real Madrid star’s untimely exit has dwindled our options up front. We are left with just one natural striker in Anthony Martial.
Unfortunately, the France international has had a hard time staying fit this season. As a result, Marcus Rashford has seen himself play as a striker on most occasions in the current campaign.
Gakpo has been impressive since last season. However, the Holland international has taken his game to the next level this term. The forward also shined for the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup.

The 23-year-old is a versatile forward with a keen eye for goal. If Ten Hag wants him, it would be wise for the club to adhere to the Dutch manager’s wishes. United have already had success with other Eredivisie signings, such as Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia.
