Manchester United one of the frontrunners in the race for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo
Manchester United are one of the frontrunners in the race for the signature of PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands star Cody Gakpo, according to Soccer News (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils were interested in the 23-year-old in the summer of 2022. However, a deal did not end up materialising and the forward stayed at the Eredivisie outfit.
Gakpo’s signing is once again being eyed by the Old Trafford side. This time around, the Manchester-based club will have to fend off Premier League rivals Liverpool, who are also pursuing the Holland international.
The 23-year-old has been in fine form at PSV since last season. However, in the current campaign, the forward has taken his game to the next level.
This term, Gakpo has made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Red and Whites. He has found the back of the net 13 times and provided 17 assists.
The 23-year-old also caught a lot of people’s eyes with his displays at the 2022 World Cup. Louis van Gaal started the forward in every fixture. The PSV star scored in every group-stage match for the Netherlands. However, they lost to Argentina on penalties in the quarter-finals.
United have struggled to have a consistent number nine up top this season. Anthony Martial has been troubled by several injuries in the current campaign.
Erik ten Hag has opted to play Marcus Rashford as the striker for most of the season. However, the 25-year-old is a natural winger. On top of that, Cristiano Ronaldo has also departed the club midway through the campaign.
