Manchester United considering re-signing Barcelona forward Memphis Depay ahead of the January transfer window
Barcelona star Memphis Depay is being considered by Manchester United to bolster the forward line ahead of the upcoming transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Sport via Man Utd News (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are thinking about re-signing the 28-year-old in January. He previously spent a season and a half at the Old Trafford side after arriving from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2015.
United were linked with a move for the Holland international in the recent transfer window. However, in the end, he ended up staying at the Camp Nou.
This season with the Blaugrana, Depay has been a bit-part player under Xavi. Injuries have hampered his game time as well. The forward has made just three appearances for the Catalan outfit in all competitions.
After leaving the Red Devils in January 2017, the 28-year-old joined Olympique Lyon. He tried at the Ligue 1 outfit for a few years before Barcelona got him on a free transfer.
While his time in Spain has not been as fruitful, Depay’s talent was on show at the 2022 World Cup. The 28-year-old scored against the United States in the round of 16 to help his team qualify for the next round. However, the Netherlands fell short of Argentina in the quarter-finals.
United lost Cristiano Ronaldo before the start of the prestigious tournament in Qatar. The 37-year-old parted ways with the club. As a result, Erik ten Hag has been left with just one natural striker in the squad.
Anthony Martial has been decent this season. Unfortunately, he has been on the sidelines for most of the campaign. Thus, Ten Hag has opted to play Marcus Rashford in the number nine role on most occasions.
