Manchester United willing to trigger £51m release clause to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi
Manchester United are willing to trigger the £51 million release clause in the contract of Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi to sign him, according to Spanish publication AS (h/t Express).
Erik ten Hag is keen on the Spain international and believes he could partner Casemiro admirably at the Old Trafford side. The Brazilian recently signed for the Red Devils from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022.
The 23-year-old recently signed a new deal with La Real until 2027. However, the midfielder’s performances have convinced the Manchester-based club to pay his release clause.
Zubimendi came up against United in the Europa League earlier this season. The midfielder played 90 minutes in both the group stage fixtures for the White and Blues as each team got a win over the other.
Sociedad are unaware of the interest from the Red Devils. They are keen on keeping a hold of the 23-year-old. However, La Real could be tempted to part ways with the Spaniard if the right offer arrives.
La Liga giants Barcelona are also interested in Zubimendi. The Blaugrana’s engine room boasts a lot of young talent. However, 34-year-old Sergio Busquets is in the twilight of his career.
The 23-year-old has come up through the ranks at the Basque Country club. He broke out in the 2020/21 season. Since then, the midfielder has been a regular fixture in the starting lineup of the Reale Arena side.
United’s midfielder evidently lacks a youthful presence. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are both 30, while Fred is 29. Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek are still relatively young. However, they have been unable to convince fans of their qualities over the years.
