England defender Harry Maguire ready to fight for place in the Manchester United team
Manchester United star Harry Maguire, currently in Qatar with England, is ready to fight for his place in the Old Trafford side’s team. The centre-back expressed his desire to get more minutes with the Red Devils.
The 29-year-old has lost his place in the Manchester-based club’s starting lineup under Erik ten Hag. Most fans believe the defender’s performances have not merited his inclusion in the starting lineup.
Maguire has been underwhelming at the club level since the start of last season. And the 29-year-old has continued to struggle with his form in the current campaign as well.
However, while the centre-back has been out of favour at United, Gareth Southgate seems to have full faith in him. Despite concerns from many supporters, the centre-back made it to England’s 26-man World Cup squad.
The Three Lions took on Iran in their opening fixture in Group B. And Maguire put in an impressive display as Southgate’s team trounced Team Melli 6-2 at the Khalifa International Stadium on 21 November.
Speaking via the Evening Standard ahead of England’s fixture against the United States on Friday (25 November), the former Leicester City star was adamant about getting back to his best for the Old Trafford side.
“Obviously, I want to play for my club and I will fight to get back into the team so it is not where I want it to be but I feel fresh, worked hard, have done extras on the training pitch so I would be ready to play.”
Maguire was dropped to the bench by Ten Hag after the defeats in the first two games in the Premier League. Since then, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have marshalled the backline.
The France and Argentine defenders have been relatively solid for United in the current campaign. As a result, it has been hard for our captain to get into the starting lineup.
